Springtime on the Roaring Fork

Monday, May 20th, 2013

Spring is an exciting time of year if you are a whitewater enthusiast. This year is no exception. While most of the Roaring Fork Valley was swearing at the cold weather and snow during April and early May, the rafting community was high-fiving each other. Aspen Mountain received 4 feet of snow since the lifts closed in mid-April!

The snowpack in the valley is currently above normal and significantly higher than last year. What all this means is we are going to have a great runoff and excellent early season rafting conditions. We are fortunate to have one of the best Class IV runs in the state right in our backyard at Slaughterhouse. This is an action packed run from the start with Entrance Exam, one of the best rapids of the trip, kicking things off only a couple of minutes into the adventure. The action is consistent and the paddling is busy all the way through to the takeout in Woody Creek. The put-in is a 5 minute drive from downtown Aspen which makes it very convenient. This trip should be runnable through most of June but the peak times will be the first couple weeks of June. The recent cold spell will help prolong the season as well.

If you are looking for a slightly milder adventure the Upper Roaring Fork is a great Class III run that begins at the Slaughterhouse takeout. This is still an exciting trip and you will get soaked at many of the great rapids such as Barking Dog, Toothache, and Snowmass Hole.

All in all, we couldn’t be more excited for the upcoming season. Great water, great weather, and great times are ahead of us. Reserve online, contact or call us today at 970.923.4544 to book your trip!
